• Wed. 19 May: /ATTA\: “Working with Couples”  with Adrienne Lee BA MPracNLP TSTA(P)   In this workshop, Adrienne will present a variety of ways in which a TA therapist can diagnose and work effectively with couples who seek relationship counselling or therapy. We shall explore the ways in which games are played in couples with the unconscious desire to find fulfilment and wholeness by joining with someone who will manifest the disowned parts of us. We shall look at the significant script implications for the choice of partner and at ways of working with the transference and primal wounds in couples work. Treatment strategies for couples work will be introduced and practised, including three-handed contract-making and specific interventions for facilitating movement from game-playing into intimacy, using Adrienne’s “Response-Ability” technique. The workshop is relevant for any counsellor or therapist who works with couples, as well as for couples who want to enhance their own relationship. • Wed. 30 June: /ATTA\: “The Management and Treatment of ‘Mental Illness’ in the Mental Health System”  with John Monk-Steel RMN RGN TSTA(P)  Mental health problems are common in the population, with one person in four presenting to the NHS services with a diagnosable mental health problem. In this workshop, we will identify what would constitute a formal mental health problem and how to recognise such problems. There will be an introduction to diagnostic processes, including use of the DSM-IV. An understanding of multi-professional working will also be discussed, as will the function of the different parts of the statutory services provision. We will address several specific Learning Outcomes from the UKCP HIPS “Mental Health Familiarisation Placement” policy. Trainees who demonstrate their achievement of the relevant learning outcomes will be able to claim this workshop toward the Mental Health Familiarisation requirement set forth by HIPS. • Wed. 20 Oct.: /ATTA\: “The Therapist and the Introjected Abuser”  with Enid Welford BA DipSocSci PTSTA(P) Therapists who work with victims of sexual abuse can be surprised at the intensity of their reactions to some clients who have been subjected to abuse. Empathy with the victim can lead us to discount the nature of the introjected abuser, and leave us vulnerable to the tactics used originally by the abuser on the victim, and subsequently used on the therapist in an attempt to maintain the status quo. We will account in the workshop some factors common to most abusers; this information is empowering for both therapist and victim. We will then look at ways to work with the guerrilla tactics in which the introjected abuser engages with the client and the therapist. This workshop will be useful for all therapists who work with victims of sexual abuse as well as those who work directly with the abusers.
