The Berne Institute
Certificate in the Theory and Practice of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (Level 1)
Six one-day modules and written assignment
Tutor: Andrew Stevens BSc MSc
This six-module course is designed for practitioners and trainees in counselling and psychotherapy who wish to integrate some of the theory and methodology of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) into the professional resources they already have as a Transactional Analyst.CBT aims to facilitate the process of a person identifying the elements of their habitual thinking and behaviour that seem to be most related to the presenting problem for which they are seeking help. These key thoughts and actions are then reviewed to discover whether there may be alternatives that might be more constructive for the person to gradually learn to use routinely in their life. To aid an individual in this learning process, a CBT approach typically uses a number of specific cognitive and behavioural methods, which research conducted over the last four to five decades has shown to be effective for a wide range of problems – if applied with a high degree of both structure in adherence to the core CB approach with that method, and flexibility in adapting that approach to an individual’s particular circumstances.
The intended outcome of the Course is that students will be able to use basic CBT methods in routine clinical work with psychological and mental health problems presenting at mild to moderate levels of severity. Each day will include some consideration of typical problems encountered in the applications of CB methods with various client groups, and Module 6 will allow a more considered overview of problematic issues in application. Each day will be a mix of didactic presentation, small- and large-group discussions, and exercises. Participants will be expected to keep a reflective journal of their learning and application of CBT theory to TA theory and psychotherapy.
The course will begin in January 2010 and will comprise six one-day modules. All dates are Wednesdays.
Module I (20 Jan.): The CBT Model in Psychological Therapy
What is CBT? – In this module we will describe the core principles of a CB approach to psychological problems and psychotherapy; review some “not uncommon” beliefs about what CBT is – and is not; and describe various modes of offering a CB approach to clients. Assessment and Formulations – will describe a CB approach to collecting and making sense of clinical information, socialising clients to the approach, identifying therapeutic aims, and measuring outcomes.Module II (17 Feb.): Core CBT Methods
This module will introduce the core methods of CBT including: Structured Cognitive Methods – the concept of Guided Discovery, Socratic dialogue; “automatic thought records”, and the use of diary keeping, etc. Structured Behavioural Methods – behavioural experiments and skills learning – or re-learning. Beyond the therapy session – the use of “Homework”; transferring learning from the clinical session to real life, etc.Module III (24 Mar.): A CBT Approach to Fear and Anxiety
This module will focus on the principles of emotional processing and exposure therapy, and the range of clinical applications of these methods, including examples of formulations and therapy methods for phobias, obsessive compulsive problems, post traumatic stress disorder, childhood trauma and unresolved grief.Module IV (21 Apr.): A CBT Approach to Problems of Mood
This module will focus on the use of CBT methods with depression – including examples of formulations, structured activity techniques, countering depressive thoughts, etc. Some description of CBT approaches to other mood problems – e.g. bipolar disorder and anger, will also be included.Module V (12 May): A CBT Approach to Habit Problems and “Unusual” Beliefs and Experiences
This module will focus on the use of CBT methods with addictions – including examples of formulations, and therapy methods for substance misuse problems, eating disorders, and psychosis.Module VI (30 June*): Difficulties in Using a CBT Approach; Consolidating your CBT skills; and What Next?
This final module will consider some of the difficulties in using the CBT approach, including client and therapist factors (e.g. “resistance”, psychological-mindedness, incomplete application of methods, therapist cognitions). It will also focus on consolidating and integrating cognitive and behavioural approaches in your practice – and how to develop CBT training further. (*Please note: this module was previously announced as being on 23rd June - note the change in date to 30 June).Written work
Participants wishing certification will be required to submit an assignment demonstrating the integration of some chosen aspect of the theory or practice covered on the course. Assignments are to be submitted by 31 August 2010 at latest. Participants will also be expected to keep a reflective learning journal that demonstrates their integration of CBT with TA.Certification
