A programme for CTAs in the Psychotherapy field:

Masters’ Degree in TA Psychotherapy
by APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning)

Are you qualified as a Certified Transactional Analyst in the Psychotherapy (Clinical) field of application? Then you can have your CTA qualification taken into account for the award of the degree of Master of Science in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy, in the APL programme conducted by The Berne Institute and validated by Middlesex University. You are eligible for entry to the programme whether you studied for your CTA at The Berne Institute or undertook your training with any other transactional analysis trainers—accredited by EATA or ITAA—anywhere in the world.

Our arrangements for APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) are designed so that the high academic standard of the CTA qualification is taken fully into account when awarding MSc credits. APL applicants who hold the CTA will automatically be granted 120 credits at academic Level 4, towards the total of 180 credits required for the award of the Masters’ degree. The remaining 60 credits then have to be earned during a programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The CPD options have been made as flexible as possible. All candidates have to attend at least one Professional Development Workshop (PDW) and present a paper there, of a standard suitable for publication in a professional journal. (Professional Development Workshops run for three days; they may be separate events or be run in conjunction with the established Professional Excellence Workshops, held twice per year either in Nottingham or Kent). You will then have a choice of three other options:

  • attend a second PDW and present a paper, again of a standard suitable for publication; or
  • attend four workshops in the "Applied Topics in Transactional Analysis" series held at The Berne Institute, and submit a 2,000-word essay relating the content of one of these to your practice of TA; or
  • submit a long essay of 5,000 words on an aspect of TA theory or practice, as agreed with programme tutors.
  • Academic supervision of the process of preparing your presentation, the article(s) and other written work is an essential part of the programme. Whatever other arrangements you make for this, you will be expected to have supervision with an Academic Supervisor, approved by The Berne Institute, at least three times per year. If you live outside the UK, or in the UK but a long way from The Berne Institute, you may arrange to have some or all of your academic supervision by telephone or email, by agreement with your Academic Supervisor.

Fees and costs: the current schedule of fees is as follows:

  • Fee for registration with Middlesex University:  £1,050
  • APL assessment fee: £400
  • Course fee: £600
  • Thus total of fees: £2,050
  • The course fee pays for the required core PDW and the options, including the marking of your written work. In addition to the above fees, you should budget for at least one hour of academic supervision per term, at the fee per hour currently charged by your Academic Supervisor (a typical fee would be in the region of £40 - £70 per hour). Options for payment by instalments are available on all course fees.

If you would like further information, or wish to apply for a place on the course, please contact the Academic Registrar, Dr Ian Stewart, at The Berne Institute.
